This past weekend, at our Steampunk Empire Symposium information desk at the World Steam Expo, we took all the names of the people who submitted survey feedback regarding April’s inaugural Symposium, tossed them in a top hat, jostled them about a bit, and then picked out two names.
Congratulations to Marie Shniper and Jennie Gist who each won a free ticket to next year’s Symposium! Huzzah!
Last year Aloysius and I went to The World Steam Expo to start promoting the inaugural Steampunk Empire Symposium. That was the year history (or at least alternative history) was made when we met Charlie, the third member of Pandora Promotions and fellow conspirator in the planning of the Symposium.
With the Symposium a firmly established event on the steampunk calendar, the planning committee , accompanied by our newest companion Halcyon Hazzard, returned to the Expo to celebrate, make more friends, promote the 2013 Symposium, and have a fabulous weekend!
We spent most of our time interacting with old friends and familiar faces; the steampunk community is a fairly close one and it was very exciting this year to realize that we are becoming good friends with many of the people who are regulars to the aether circuit: ladies and gentlemen like Lord Bobbins from Telsacon, Jeff Platt of Highwind Steamworks, Scott and Samantha from Frenchy and the Punk, and friends like Kylan Toles. The bands were great as always, and we particularly enjoyed getting to see Steam Powered Giraffe live. I’ve had their song Honeybee stuck in my head ever since.
Aloysius, Charlie, Halcyon, and I would like to thank Arthur Geissler, Tom, Erica, and all the crew of the World Steam Expo for putting on a great weekend and for being such great hosts. We are very pleased to be building closer alliances between the Symposium, the Expo, and Teslacon in a collaborative effort to put Midwest America prominently on the steampunk map!

A fairly new group of steampunks based in the Hamilton area. We are all about promoting the culure and going out and having a good time. We meet at least once a month, sometimes more frequently and are always looking for new members.
We are pleased to announce that the motley bunch known as the Vagabonds will return to Cincinnati in April 2013 to be a part of the program for the next Steampunk Empire Symposium . . . huzzah!
Lurking out from the shadows, The Vagabonds are a crew of nomadic, crime solving, ninja bandits who have an absurd love for terrorizing Boston, Michigan, and Ohio areas. They’d go farther, but because of their fearless leader’s love for messing with machinery he really shouldn’t be touching, that’s about as far as they’ve been able to get. But stay tuned! A few miles of rope, and this may get fixed.
From terrorizing “The Man” to assembling like minded individuals into coherent masses for posing and picture taking, they do it all. Being conventionally recognized doesn’t really suit their style at times, but being the good hearted individuals they are, they’ll easily be prepared to give creative instruction on any manner of topics.
Remember, when you throw aristocrats, pirates, a cook, and a few outlaws at each other, you can’t help but come up with a bronze and brass encyclopedia whose pages are always changing.

The Games are certainly the signature event of the Steampunk Empire Symposium, a civilized contest between many regional airships and steampunk groups to win the glory, the Symposium Trophy, and four badges to next year’s convention.
For the 2013 Symposium Games, to keep the contests creative and fresh, all competing airships must submit and facilitate a challenge in order to be a part of the Games. Each airship, obviously, can not compete in their own challenge, and impartial judges will allocated, but it is the responsibility of the challenging airship to formulate detailed rules of the game and provide any necessary equipment.
Due to the more complex (and jolly well more fun) nature of the ever expanding Symposium Games, formal registration of games and airships must be complete by midnight (EST) on Friday, March 15, 2013 . . . the Ides of March!
Further details coming soon . . . so start plotting your devilish challenge now.
Over the next few days (and beyond) we are going to continue building the profile pages for the various airships and groups that registered with the Steampunk Symposium; as was mentioned in the closing ceremonies this past weekend, the Symposium’s wish is bring more attention to what is new and happening with all the different groups in the vicinity of the Symposium (Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, and neighboring states). While we already have basic information on many of the airships, captains, and their crews, we would like to post more details such as pictures, contact information, bios, updates, etc. Please email the details and pictures that you wish to appear to firstname.lastname@example.org
For those who attended the 2012 Steampunk Empire Symposium, and if you have not done so already, please take a moment to take our SURVEY which you may either submit anonymously or list your name in a drawing for two chances to win a full weekend badge (or rather ribbon) to the 2013 Symposium; the draw will be held on Saturday, May 26th at the Steampunk Empire Symposium table at the World Steam Expo. Also we invite all of you to RSVP for the Steampunk Empire Symposium MMXIII at either The Steampunk Empire event page, the Facebook event page, or both.
